Hello,
I am from Iowa and have never fished Missouri before. I am planning a trip to Missouri for late spring or early summer. I was wondering what trout streams would be the best to fish for a moderately experienced fly angler and another novice fly angler. I am also considering getting a guide. Does anyone know of any good guides in the area? Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks,
Jack

Lots of good fishing….My favorites are the Blue Ribbon Streams…The Current, North Fork of the White River, and the Eleven Point. Guides are available on all of them.
Sam Potter & Norm Crisp serve the Current

Matt provides some good descriptions on his home page…Check it out and I'm sure you will find something to meet your objectives. Cheers.

Thanks for the help. I think we might get a guide for a half day. Not for sure yet, put probably on the Current or Maremec. Then I think we will fish another day or two on our own. It looks like there are quite a few streams in the Rolla area such as the Little Piney, Meremec, Mill, Spring, and Roubidoux. Any suggestions on these streams? Would Rolla be a good place to stay? Thanks.

Rolla is a college town with lots of hotel rooms……and some good fishing nearby…Little Piney, Mill Creek, and Spring Creek would be your best bets…The attraction is wild rainbow trout that average 6-10", a few bigger. Its a short drive between all of them, so you could hit all three in a day if you wanted too.
Current below Montauk state park is a top notch brown trout fishery. 14-17" brown trout are common, and bigger fish are there. Its a bit more than an hour south of Rolla so I'd stay at Montauk State Park, or Reed's Cabins just up the hill from the park so you can devote some time to it.
Meramec, its a tough place to fish and tough to wade after a rain. Its usually slow fishing but there are some big fish there.

Alright, I might get a guided trip to the Current for a day and fish it a little bit the next day on my own and stay in or near the park. Then I might get a hotel in Rolla and do some fishing on Mill and Little Piney.
Thanks for the help Gavin.

Something to consider, if you haven't already, are the 'Trout Parks'. Your novice, in particular, might be best starting out there. If you're out in the wild-and-wooly Ozarks, you'll be dealing with wading, backcast loving trees, wood in the water, access, etc. The Trout Park may not be your thing, but it sure removes a lot of the variables that can frustrate you. Montauk is at the upper end of the Current, so you could get a taste for both if you went there. There are cabins and a motel in the Park, Reed's just outside as Gavin mentioned, and lots of other options.
Trying to take in LP and Mill may be a little too much for a first timer. You'd spend a lot of time just getting things figured out (like — where the he** am I? Why does the map say CR420 and the sign say FR1000? What's that funny smell, and why do those guys look so pissed?)
BTW — Have you fished the Driftless Area in your home state?

Ness,
Thanks for the reply. I saw that Montauk has a fly fishing and artificials section. That would be a good place for him to start out. Would we have trouble finding a spot to fish, because i have heard the trout parks can be very busy.
I try to get up and fish NE iowa for trout at least 3-4 times a year. The best streams are around 3 hours from where I live. Iowa has around 50 streams that support trout, and around 30 have natural reproduction of browns, brooks, and even a few rainbows. The streams aren't usually more than 20 feet wide and are usually run gin clear. I really enjoy fishing these creeks. If you have any questions about these streams, I would be glad to help. Here is a link that has a lot of good info if you want to check it out. http://www.iowadnr.gov/fish/fi…..utstr.html
Thanks Again,
Jack
